Matrix Transpose: Index Inversion & Symmetric Operators

Dr. Alorika Chatterjee & Dr. Anirban Shaw Science & Physics Learners Python 3 / NumPy / SciPy

1. Core Principles & Theoretical Framework

Index Permutation: Reflects matrix elements across the main diagonal: $A_{ij}^T = A_{ji}$.
Physical Symmetries: Identifies symmetric tensors (moment of inertia, stress-strain) where $\mathbf{A}^T = \mathbf{A}$, and skew-symmetric tensors ($\mathbf{A}^T = -\mathbf{A}$).
Hermitian Adjoint: For complex quantum matrices, transposition combined with complex conjugation yields the adjoint $\mathbf{A}^\dagger = (\mathbf{A}^*)^T$.

2. Mathematical Formulation & Algorithmic Pipeline

Transpose definition and tensor symmetry classification:

$$ (\mathbf{A}^T)_{ij} = A_{ji}, \quad \text{Symmetric: } \mathbf{A} = \mathbf{A}^T, \quad \text{Antisymmetric: } \mathbf{A} = -\mathbf{A}^T $$

3. Numerical Mechanics & Implementation Logic

  • Target Allocation: Initialize a transposed matrix of dimension $n \times m$ if original is $m \times n$.
  • Assignment: Set T[j][i] = A[i][j] across all row $i$ and column $j$ indices.
  • List Comprehension: Can be concisely computed via [[row[i] for row in A] for i in range(len(A[0]))].

4. Relevant Computational Practice Exercises

Exercise 1
Compute the transpose of a rectangular $2 \times 3$ matrix and confirm the output has dimension $3 \times 2$.
Exercise 2
Decompose an arbitrary square matrix into a symmetric part $\mathbf{S} = \frac{1}{2}(\mathbf{A} + \mathbf{A}^T)$ and an antisymmetric part $\mathbf{A}_a = \frac{1}{2}(\mathbf{A} - \mathbf{A}^T)$.
Exercise 3
Verify the transpose product identity $(\mathbf{A}\mathbf{B})^T = \mathbf{B}^T \mathbf{A}^T$.
